Dear Temple Heights Families,
I am honored to be the principal of such and outstanding school. The teachers, staff, families, and students all work together to make Temple Heights a top notch place to learn. I would like to share with you two areas of focus that we will be working on at school to help students improve academically and socially. Support and reinforcement of these areas at home will solidify their use among students.
Please and Thank You
This year, we wish to encourage a positive environment through the implementation of the PLEASE AND THANK YOU PROCESS. We hope to see positive attitudes in students and staff and increase respect and empathy towards others. The concept is simple: Expose the basic manner of “please and thank you” to students, staff, and visitors on site. Our campus will be a place where “please and thank you” is expected. We hope this process will produce rewarding results not only at school but also at home and in the community.
At School, all site staff members from the principal to the lunch supervisor will be involved. We will model the use of “please and thank you”. We will also encourage our students use “please and thank you”. We will develop visuals proclaiming our school as a “please and thank you school”.
The parent component is an important piece. The greater the support and duplication of the process at home, the greater chance for movement of “please and thank you” to the unconscious. Parents are asked to model consistent use of “please and thank you”. In addition, encourage the use of “please and thank you” from your child and develop visuals for your home such as a sign saying, “Our home is a please and thank you home” or “We use please and thank you in this house”.
Academic Language
This year at Temple Heights, all of our classes will be working on developing academic language in our students. Academic English is not a natural language that we acquire through extensive listening and social interaction. Instead, it must be explicitly and systematically taught, not just caught. Teachers will stress the difference between classroom language and playground language. We will be modeling the academic language as adults, provide sentence stems for students to use as they build their language skills, and provide accountability for student participation in this process.
At home, you can help us support this school goal by supporting language for attentive listening. Use the chart below. Instead of allowing your child to speak to you using the everyday term, encourage the more formal academic English.

Parent involvement is also critical to the success of our school. I always welcome your input and value what you have to say. If you would like your voice to be heard, please think of joining PTA, SSC or ELAC. We are always looking for parents to help and your contributions are valuable, however small they may seem to you. The purpose of each of these organizations is to ensure that parent voices are heard at our school. Come by the office and we will give you more information.
In the coming months we have many exciting family activities planned, and I hope to see everyone in attendance. Please make sure to check out the school calendar. I appreciate your support and want to keep you involved in your child’s education. I look forward to our continuing partnership.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Morton
